Steve Sweeney has issued the following statement regarding Bill S3672:
“Everyone’s rights must be respected, but laws are laws. As Democrats, we need to get back to listening to regular people. Illegal immigrants who commit crimes are not welcome in New Jersey, and as Governor, I will repeal New Jersey’s sanctuary state status.
“That being said, the Trump administration’s raid in Newark is not an immigration issue, it’s a rule of law issue. They committed an illegal search and picked up U.S. citizens. That is unacceptable.
“Further, it’s important in these times to remember to treat people humanely. As Senate President, I led the fight against family separation here in New Jersey, and I have not and will not back down from that position. As Governor, my job is to keep New Jerseyans safe. Control over these issues lies solely with Congress and the President, and the unfortunate reality is that they haven’t done a damn thing about it.”
