Woodbury, NJ As Washington prepares for Trump’s military parade for his birthday, Steve Sweeney is calling out Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill for her vote to allow Trump to use military and taxpayer money for politically-motivated parades and exhibitions. If Congresswoman Sherrill is claiming to be the candidate who will stand up to Trump, why did she vote to allow him to conduct vanity military parades to boost his political agenda?

Here are the facts:

  • Sherrill voted with Republicans to allow President Trump to hold “military parades and exhibitions for political purposes”

  • On July 11, 2019, Mikie Sherrill was one of just eleven Democrats who voted with every Republican against the Raskin amendment to HR 2500, which was an amendment to “bar the president from holding military parades and exhibitions for political purposes.”

  • And this comes after she already voted to allow Trump to personally profit from the federal government at taxpayer expense.

“As a veteran, Congresswoman Sherrill’s vote to allow Trump to use the military for parades to advance his own political agenda is disappointing,” said Joe Heitman, New Jersey resident and Vietnam veteran. I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and fought for my country. New Jersey’s next governor needs to be able to stand up to Trump, and her failure to stand up to this exercise in vanity shows she’s unwilling, or too afraid, to do so.

“I wore the uniform to serve my country, not a political agenda,” said Robert Jonas, a US Army and Vietnam-era Veteran. “I want a governor who won’t flinch when it’s time to stand up and fight, and the Congresswoman’s vote doesn’t show me that. When he’s governor, Steve Sweeney will take the fight to Trump for us, no matter what.”

Steve Sweeney has issued the following statement:

"Congresswoman Sherrill has developed a habit of talking one way and acting in another: From taking money from Elon Musk and only giving it back after being publicly pressured, to attracting support from one of the largest anti-union groups in the country, and allowing Trump to use our armed service members as pawns for his extremist agenda, she has shown that New Jerseyans can’t count on her to stand up to the chaos of Washington.

“As Governor, I’ll take on the big issues like lowering the cost of living and protecting the rights and benefits of workers, families, seniors, and everyone in between. New Jerseyans need a governor who will fight for them every day – not someone who will run away from taking on Trump in Congress to climb the next rung of the career ladder."
