Sweeney Calls On Governor and Legislature to Help Working People Pay For Trump’s Higher Prices
West Deptford, NJ – In order to provide necessary and immediate financial relief for New Jersey residents, Steve Sweeney is calling upon Governor Murphy and the state Legislature to implement a one-time $400 check for every household in New Jersey with an income not exceeding $150,000. Based on an analysis of Census data, approximately 2.5 million households in New Jersey meet this income criteria, representing an estimated cost of $1 billion.
Given the State of New Jersey's budget surplus and rising household costs, it is imperative that direct relief is provided for New Jersey families. Families in New Jersey were struggling before the recent spikes in prices for essential goods – such as eggs and rising utility costs – highlighting the urgent need for financial support.
"Since Donald Trump is sticking it to the middle class by rolling back lower prescription drugs for seniors and pushing tariffs that raise prices on everyday products, our residents need relief,” stated Steve Sweeney. "This is needed to help working people in New Jersey pay for the ‘Trump Tax.’"
Acknowledging that the Governor and the legislature must maintain this year's commitment to fully fund the state pension system, public school aid, and property tax relief programs among other priorities, there is still enough in surplus to provide this relief. Steve Sweeney emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of New Jersey residents.
“While it would be beneficial to have a larger surplus, the state has previously managed with less during times when residents were not under as much financial strain as they are today," Sweeney added. “Rather than unveiling lofty proposals, let’s focus on delivering immediate relief to New Jerseyans in need.”
Steve Sweeney implores Governor Murphy and the Legislature to act swiftly to allocate these funds, assuring residents that comprehensive measures will be taken to pass the budget while also addressing the pressing economic challenges they face. If they don't do it now, Sweeney will do it immediately upon taking office.
